Purpose:
"Enhanced depth of focus" (EDoF) lenses abandon the conventional concept of conventional multifocal lenses to generate high and well-separated focal points for near and far. Instead, two focal ponts are created immediately one behind the other. In 2017, Zeiss launched a product in this category called AT LARA 829MP. The aim is to present the optical properties of this new EDOF lens compared to selected EDoF and multifocal lenses.

Methods:
In an AT LARA 829MP (Zeiss), another EDOF lens (Symfony ZXR00, Johnson & Johnson Vision) and a tri-focal intraocular lens (AT Lisa Tri 839 M, Zeiss), the "Trough Focus Response" (TFR) curve was determined on an optical bench. The artificial cornea used had a spherical aberration correction of 0.1 μm, the pupil opening used was 3.0 and 4.5 mm. The measurement was carried out with best centering with green and white light.
Results:
The TFR curve of the AT LARA 829MP (Zeiss) shows two peaks that merge at the basis even with white light. The two focal points of the TFR curve of the Symfony ZXR00 that can be distinguished using green light, merge into one wide focal point in case of using white light. The AT Lisa Tri 839 M shows under both conditions three well separated focal points. The results are compared by superimposing the TFR curves.
Conclusions:
EDOF lenses aim to produce a wide focal point with an increased depth of focus, while intraocular multifocal lenses generate separated focal points for defined viewing distances.
