Abstract Details
Purpose:
To assess the impact of combining eyelid massage and omega-3 supplementation on postoperative signs and symptoms of dry eye among patients that underwent bilateral LASIK treatment for myopic correction.
Setting:
Cathedral Eye Clinic, Belfast, Northern-Ireland, UK.
Methods:
Twenty-five patients (50 eyes) undergoing LASIK were initiated on a combination regimen which included eyelid massage using the Eyepeace (for 2-weeks preoperatively) and omega-3 supplementation (2-weeks preoperatively and continued postoperatively for 3-months) (group A); while another 25 patients (50 eyes) underwent LASIK without combination regimen (group B). Tear lipid layer (DR-1 grading scale) using the Tear Scope, fluorescein tear break-up (fTBUT), tear osmolarity, corneal staining, OSDI score and quality of vision (QoV) questionnaire score was measured at baseline, 1-month, 2-months and 3-months postoperatively. Both groups were matched preoperatively for surgical ablation depth and had similar baseline dry eye measurements.
Results:
Postoperative retrospective comparative analysis of group A and B at 3-months revealed: DR-1 score was 2.0±1.1 and 2.5±1.2 (P<0.05); fTBUT was 6.5±1.3 and 5.1±1.5 seconds (P<0.05); tear osmolarity was 290.1±10.4 and 312.8±8.9 mOsms/L (P<0.05); corneal staining was 0.7±0.2 and 1.05±0.5 (P>0.05); OSDI was 10.9±6.3 and 19.2±4.6 (P<0.05); QoV was 9.1±0.5 and 8.2±0.9 (P<0.05) respectively.
Conclusions:
A combination of preoperative eyelid massage and continued omega-3 supplementation can be an effective treatment option in alleviating symptoms and improving ocular surface in patients post laser refractive surgery since group A was associated with statistically significant better DR-1 tear lipid layer score, fTBUT, OSDI and QoV scores at 3-months postoperative.
