Purpose:

The objective of our study is to evaluate the clinical outcomes of laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) surgery for the correction of different levels of myopia and myopic astigmatism and the need for enhancement to treat residual refractive errors using three different 500Hz Excimer Lasers: WaveLight EX500 from Alcon (WvL), Schwind Amaris 500E (SchA) and Technolas Teneo 317 from Bausch&Lomb (T317).

Clinica Baviera. Spain.

Methods:

We present a retrospective case series of 30166 eyes with different levels of myopia or myopic astigmatism who underwent LASIK treatment between years 2010 and 2016; 16297 in the WvL group, 1457 in the SchA group and 12412 in the T317 group using Moria One Use-Plus SBK microkeratome for flap creation. Topography changes, uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA), corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), manifest and cycloplegic refraction were evaluated during a 3-month follow-up period. Safety and efficacy indexes were also analyzed. Eyes with residual refractive error requiring an enhancement were treated 3 months after the primary surgery.

Results:

No statistically significant differences were found between groups in Safety and Efficacy indexes or postoperative SE. The overall need for enhancement was slightly lower in the SchA group (p<0,05). Better outcomes were found among groups with low to moderate preoperative SE and low cylinder.

Conclusions:

All 500Hz Excimer Lasers used in this study have demonstrated very good refractive outcomes, with slight differences in the rates of patients close to emmetropia and a very low need for secondary treatments.
