Abstract Details
Purpose:
TO find outthe prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in patients with type II Diabetes Mellitus and to explore relationship between deficiency of vitamin D and severity of diabetic retinopathy.
Setting:
King Hamad University Hospital
Kingdom of Bahrain
Methods:
In this case-controlled observational series 200 patients with type II DM were included in the study. Patients who receive vitamin D supple-ments were excluded. Dilated fundus examination was done and retinopathy was classified into No DR , NPDR and PDR. Serum 25(OH)D was measured and classified into Normal (>30 ng/ml), In-sufficient (20-30 ng/ml) and Deficient (< 20 ng/ml).
Results:
• 92% of type II DM patients have low vitamin D ( insufficient & deficient )
• 58% of no DR group patients have vitamin D deficiency
• 62% of NPDR group patients have vitamin D deficiency
• 100% of PDR group patients have vitamin D deficiency
Conclusions:
92% of TypeiiDM patients were found to have low vitamin D level (insufficient & deficient), however, in our study vitamin D level was significantly correlated with severity of diabetic retinopathy as 100% of PDR patients were deficient in vitamin D.we conclude that progress of retinopathy in type II Diabetis Mellitus patients can be delayed if they receive Vitamin D supplementation early on in the course of the disease.
