Purpose:
The study aim is to determine the potential effect of the combined treatment with HAMT-EU and ADSCS in the management of pathologies involving the posterior segment which cause severe visual loss and did not respond to conventional therapy.
Setting:
Department of Ophthalmology, Volta Mantovana Public Hospital, Mantova, Italy
Methods:
In this study we treated adults who have documented degenerative pathologies of the retina and optic nerve with a visual acuity < 1.00 logMAR. Basal evaluation comprises recording of subjective and objective visual symptoms including dazzle, space perception and visual field test. These values are summarized and expressed as a score between 1 and 5. ERGs and VEPs are performed as well. Treatment consist in a peribulbar injection of combined HAMT-EU an ADSCS solution. Follow-up visit is performed 4-weeks after the treatment. Results are expressed as increase over baseline.
Results:
A total of 20 patients were enrolled in the study. Patients had different diseases concerning the posterior segment such as optic nerve atrophy and retinitis pigmentosa. Results showed and improvement in the 90% of the values found at electrophysiological tests and in the 97% of the cases with reference to visual capability score.
Conclusions:
The combined treatment with HAMT-EU and ADSCS was able to improve visual capability. This improvement is essential for patient who have severe visual impairment and it can help them to gain independence and to increase their quality of life.
