Abstract Details
Purpose:
To assess learning period difficulties, safety and visual outcome after SMILE procedure in mild, moderate & high myopia cases.
Setting:
Thind Eye Hospital, Jalandhar, Punjab,India
Methods:
A retrospective analysis of records of initial 1000 eyes of 503 patients who underwent SMILE procedure from October 2016 till November 2017 was done. All the procedures were done by an expert refractive surgeon (JST). Analysis was done for the demographic profile, type of myopia on the basis of spherical equivalent - mild (< 3D), moderate (3-6D), high (> 6D), preoperative best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), operative difficulties, post operative uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA) and post operative complications.
Results:
1000 eyes of 503 patients in the age range of 18-49 yrs were analysed. Maximum 44.10% of eyes were of moderate myopia (mild -38.2%, high- 17.7%). 92% of operative difficulties (n=25) were encountered in initial 50 eyes, which included difficulty in lenticule extraction (2%), conversion to conventional RELEX (0.1%). and suction loss (n=4). None of these eyes had any postoperative sequale. Of all the patients, 97.7% achieved 6/6 vision, {98.42% im mild myopia, 98.18% in moderate myopia & 94.91 % in high myopia}. 2% had <6/6 to 6/9 and 0.3%had <6/9.
Conclusions:
SMILE has short learning curve in hands of experienced refractive surgeon with minimal postoperative complications & excellent visual outcome in mild, moderate as well as high myopia.
