Abstract Details
Purpose:
To determine the stability and consistency of outcomes of the Small Incision Lenticule Extraction (SMILE) over 1 year follow up and identify nomogram variations across a range of myopic refractive errors.
Setting:
Clearview Institute Refractive Clinic
Methods:
The initial consecutive first 170 patients undergoing the SMILE procedure after its approval were followed for 18 months. They underwent a cycloplegic refraction/toatl eye and corneal wavefronts/corneal topography/HD Analyzer/Tear Osmolality preoperatively as well as postoperatively at mongth 1, 3, 6, 12 and 18. The patients were divided into grophs ! -1.25 to -3, B -3.25 to -6.75 and C greater than -7. Each group was subdivided into clinders up to -2 and greater than -2. The data were analyzed with the ASSORT program.
Results:
332 eyes of 170 patients were analyzed. The mean uncorrected visual acuity was 20/17 at month 18 and no eyes lost a line of BCVA. Myopia ranging from -1.5 to -13. and cylinder from .5 to 5 were treated. The nomogram adjustments varied across the groups and were of a higher percentage value for the lower refractive errors with an absolute value of 45 for Group A, 55 for Group B and 8 for Group C. The mean residual cylinder was 0.4 diopters. 8/332 eyes required a retreatment.. The mean topographic change after month 1 was 0.35 diopters (NS).
Conclusions:
Refractive Lenticule Extraction appears to yield stable and predictable results. Nomogram adjustments will have to be titrated according the the specific refractive error. The retreatment rates appear to be low.
