Abstract Details

Purpose:

To report the incidence of intraoperative flap complications following 200 KHz femtosecond laser-assisted laser in situ keratomileusis (femto-LASIK).

Setting:

LASIK Center, Ophthalmology Department, Bangkok Metropolitan Administration General Hospital (Klang Hospital), Bangkok, Thailand.

Methods:

From January 2016 to December 2017, patients undergone femto-LASIK were consecutively enrolled in this retrospective study. Flap creation was performed with the Wavelight FS-200 (Alcon Laboratories, Inc., Fort Worth, TX, USA). Femtosecond laser settings included raster scan pattern, spot/line separation 6.0/6.0 um, pulse repetition rate 200 KHz, pulse energy 0.6 uJ, and flap thickness 110 um. Excimer laser ablation was then performed with the Schwind Amaris 750S (Schwind eye-tech-solutions, Kleinostheim, Germany). Intraoperative complications during flap creation were recorded and described.

Results:

A total of 3343 eyes (1678 patients) were enrolled. The incidence of anterior chamber gas bubble was 1.05% (35 eyes), hard opaque bubble layer was 0.15% (5 eyes), suction loss was 0.15% (5 eyes), and vertical gas breakthrough was 0.15% (5 eyes). Incomplete flap cut was fortunately not found in our series.

Conclusions:

Although an emerging evolution of femtosecond laser significantly improved a predictability of LASIK flap creation, specific complications due to the femtosecond laser were still inevitable. However, proper management can resolve these complications and the final visual outcome was not interfered.
