Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the safety and effectiveness of a foldable non-penetrating artificial cornea for the treatment of non-inflammatory cases of cornea blindness

Setting:

Cornea Subspecialty Practice in Venezuela, CEOVAL Valencia, Venezuela

Methods:

A prospective non-randomized study of 26 patients with corneal blindness due to non-inflammatory causes including failed grafts, burns, scars, dystrophies and keratoconus. Patients had the KeraKlear foldable non-penetrating artificial cornea implanted into a corneal pocket using a femtosecond laser after excision of diseased opacified corneal tissue.

Results:

100% of these patients had improvement in vision. The Average improvement in visual acuity on the Snellen chart was 7 lines. There were no cases of endophthalmitis, retroprosthetic membrane or glaucoma. There was one case of infection and one case of corneal melt. Retention of the device during the follow-up period was 92%. Average follow-up was 50.4 months (18-65 months)

Conclusions:

These results of the KeraKlear artificial cornea show that this device can improve vision in patients with non-inflammatory causes of corneal blindness as a primary or secondary procedure. No cases of glaucoma, endophthalmitis or retroprosthetic membrane were observed. The device has a high retention rate over 5 years.
