Abstract Details
Purpose:
This study aims to determine if there is statistically significant difference in Matrix Metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) levels in tear film of patients with keratoconus (I-III stages) and in tear film of patients without any ocular pathology.
Setting:
A controlled cross-sectional study was conducted from July 2017 till January 2018 in the ‘’Shengavit’’ Medical Center in Yerevan, Armenia.
Methods:
The MMP-9 levels were assessed in tear samples using ELISA analyses. In total, 150 eyes were examined. Two groups were distinguished: I (control) group (n=75) of patients without any ocular pathology and II group (n=75) of patients with (I-III) stages of keratoconus. The parameters of the I group were following: mean corneal anterior curvature was 7.931, mean corneal thickness was 542.233 and mean back corneal elevation was 7.311. In the II group mean anterior corneal curvature was 6.980, mean corneal thickness was 416.333 and mean back corneal elevation was 54.96.
Results:
Mean levels of MMP-9 in the control group and in the group with keratoconus were 0.181 and 40.640 respectively.
Conclusions:
The results of the study demonstrated that the difference between the two groups was statistically significant (P –value < 0.0001; CI=95%). So the detection of the MMP-9 level in tear fluid could be an additional diagnostic method of keratoconus.
