Abstract Details
Purpose:
To evaluate the Visian ICL® vault under different light conditions and pupil diameters, using Spectralis® anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT). We want to show that the vault is not static and should be seen as a dynamic concept.
Setting:
The Ophthalmology Department of the Hospital de Vila Franca de Xira, Portugal.
Methods:
We evaluated 40 eyes of 20 patients 1 month after surgery, measuring the variation in ICL vault with different pupil diameters induced by an external light source.
Results:
We found a significant difference in vault size with pupil diameter. There was a mean difference of pupil diameter of 2.2mm from scotopic to photopic conditions, and a mean difference of vault size of 140microns.
Conclusions:
It’s important to understand the dynamic nature of the ICL® vault, because that is fundamental for the long-term safety of this IOL. The AS-OCT allows for a simple and fast way to evaluate this variation. The concept of vault interval is a more accurate and comprehensive way to evaluate the dynamic position of this IOL inside the human eye.
