Abstract Details
Purpose:
To compare the quality of vision following SMILE versus SMILE combined with accelerated cross-linking ( SMILE XTRA) for borderline corneas in patients undergoing bilateral SMILE procedure for myopia correction.
Setting:
Nethradhama Super Speciality Eye Hospital, Bangalore
Methods:
100 eyes of 50 patients undergoing bilateral SMILE (n=50 eyes) and SMILE XTRA with borderline corneas(n=50 eyes) for myopia/myopic astigmatism were evaluated. Both the groups were matched for age and refractive error. On post-op day 1 and 3 months, UDVA, CDVA, Objective Scatter Index( OSI), and MTF cut off was assessed and compared between the two groups.
Results:
Mean age of the participants was 25.3 years. On post op day 1, the UDVA in the SMILE group was -0.11 logMAR vs -0.08 logMAR in the SMILE XTRA group(p =0.22). The mean OSI score and MTF cut off was comparable in both groups, OSI value being 1.14 vs 1.2 ( p=0.30 )& MTF cut off values being 36.42 vs 34.61 (p=0.90) respectively. At 3 months also, the UDVA, OSI and MTF cut off values were comparable in both groups. None of the eyes in the SMILE Xtra group, had incidence of haze or infection compromising the quality of vision.
Conclusions:
Results of this study demonstrated comparable optical visual acuity and optical quality between SMILE and SMILE XTRA at 3 months follow-up, suggesting that SMILE combined with high fluence accelerated cross linking has minimal effect on the visual recovery.
