Keratometry changes and wound healing after microwave thermokeratoplasty on rabbits

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To investigate the keratometry changes and wound healing process of microwave thermokeratoplasty on rabbit eyes.

Setting:

Key Laboratory of Myopia, Ministry of Health; Department of Ophthalmology, Eye and ENT Hospital, Fudan University, Shanghai, China Shanghai Research Center of Ophthalmology and Optometry, Shanghai, China

Methods:

Eighteen New Zealand rabbits were recruited, whose one eye was treated, whereas the other eye was control. In group A (10 eyes), slit lamp photos were taken at 1d、1w、1m、3m、6m postoperatively; corneal topography was performed at 1w、1m、3m、6m postoperatively. In group B (8 eyes), two rabbits were executed at 1d、1w、1m、3m postoperatively; all rabbits were executed at 6m postoperatively, two were selected randomly. Cornea was obtained for HE staining and transmission electron microscope examination. Data were expressed as mean ± standard deviation (SD). The P value was determined using the ANOVA of repeated measuring.

Results:

Corneal edema was observed at 1d and 1w postoperatively, corneal collagen fibers of heated area were disorganized, necrotic fibroblasts were observed; from 1m postoperatively, no corneal edema was observed, morphology of corneal cells was normal, corneal collagen fibers of heated area were shrunk, and trended to be organized. Corneal keratometry parameters kept reduced after operation, from 1m postoperatively, the difference was statistically significant compared with pre operation. Corneal thickness was reduced after operation, while the difference wasn’t statistically significant.

Conclusions:

Corneal keratometry would be flattened after microwave thermokeratoplasty. Further studies are needed on its safety and stability.
