Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate long term results of new variable thickness rings (VTR) in corneal ectasia regularization. We aimed to evaluate the efficacy of these new rings in stabilized keratoconus and other forms of corneal ectasia (e.g. post-LASIK ectasia) in terms of visual acuity amelioration, corneal k flattening, astigmatism and spherical equivalent reduction, contrast sensitivity.

Setting:

Public Hospital  of San Marino Republic - Department of Specialists Clinic - Ophthalmology Section

Methods:

We evaluated uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA), best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), corneal keratometry (K1 and K2 measured in 3 mm anterior topography), corneal astigmatism, spherical equivalent and contrast sensitivity. These assessments were performed prior surgery, 7 days, 1 month, 3 months and 6 months postoperatively.

Results:

We obtained an amelioration of all parameters assessed. Especially, the mean K1 decreased from 47.99 to 43.44 diopters (D); K2 passed from 51.68 D to 46.90 D. Corneal astigmatism decreased from 4.22 D to 1.79 D and spherical equivalent decreased from 4.02 D to 1.74 D. Excellent results were achieved also in visual acuity gain. In fact UCVA was 0.1 decimal preoperatively and BCVA was 0.5 decimal. These values became 0.5 and 0.8 respectively after VTR implant.

Conclusions:

VTR are able to flatten ectatic corneas in a tailored fashion ameliorating BCVA.
