Abstract Details

Purpose:

Clinical long-term investigation of visual quality for far, intermediate and near distances, subjective refraction, PCO-rate as well as expression and binocular defocus performance in patients undergoing cataract surgery.

Setting:

nordBLICK Augenklinik Bellevue, Kiel, Germany

Methods:

This prospective study includes 50 eyes with age-related cataract, present corneal regular astigmatism over 0.75D and potential postoperative best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) of 0.63 decimal or better.  The eyes were treated bilateral with an asymmetric refractive toric EDOF-IOL (Lentis Comfort toric LS-313MF15T0-6; OSD Medical GmbH, Germany). Uncorrected and distance-corrected VA for far, intermediate and near distances was evaluated with EDTRS-charts. PCO-rate and severity was based on a scale evaluation. Rotation stability was assessed with slitlamp images. Patient satisfaction was analyzed with a validated questionnaire. Follow up evaluations were carried out 1, 3 and up to12 months postoperatively.

Results:

Mean (±SD) monocular UDVA, UIVA and UNVA remained stable through postoperative visits and was 1.10 (±0.14), 0.98 (±0.16) and 0.59 (±0.21) decimal, respectively after 12 month postoperative. Mean refractive astigmatism was reduced from -1.22 ± 1.22 D preoperatively to -0.19 ±0.21 D at one-year follow-up. IOL stability was very stable over all follow ups with lens rotation less than 3 degrees and 6 degrees in 79 % and 99 % of all eyes, respectively. PCO rate after one year was 8%. Patient satisfaction was very high regarding visual performance, spectacle independence and disturbing dysphotopic side-effects.

Conclusions:

After one year postoperative the Lentis Comfort toric provides a high level of visual quality over distances from far to intermediate with near performance usable for daily visual task. Refractive cylinder values could be effectively reduced with a high rotational stability.
