Visual acuity and patient satisfaction after bilateral implantation of a trifocal enhanced-depth-of-focus intraocular lens

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To assess the visual outcomes, patient satisfaction and spectacle independence following implantation of new trifocal enhanced depth of focus intraocular lens (IOL) with sinusoidal diffractive technology.

Setting:

Private practice set up.

Methods:

Prospective nonrandomized study in which Acriva Trinova IOLs were implanted bilaterally in 6 patients (12 eyes) following either cataract extraction or refractive lens exchange. The lens shape of this IOL is derived from sinusoidal functions and results in smoothly varying surface profiles and therefore differs from diffractive multifocal IOLs. Patients were followed at 1, 3 and 6 months postoperatively. The visual and refractive outcomes were assessed and a defocus curve was constructed. Also, patients were interviewed regarding patient satisfaction, spectacle independence and photic phenomena after the surgery.

Results:

Mean uncorrected monocular distance logMAR visual acuity (UDVA) was preoperatively 039. The averages of uncorrected monocular distance/intermediate/near (UDVA/UIVA/UNVA) postoperatively were 0.060/0.062/0.062 at 3 months. Defocus curve provided a visual acuity equal or better to 0.3 logMAR between defocus levels of +0.50 to -3.00 D. All patients were satisfied with the surgical outcome. Glare or haloes were reported by some patients in the early postoperative period, but the symptoms were non-disturbing and improved. All patients achieved spectacle independence for far, near and intermediate visual tasks.

Conclusions:

In this series of patients, implantation of trifocal enhanced depth of focus IOLs resulted in spectacle independence and satisfactory visual and refractive results. Photic phenomena although present, were not disturbing for our patients.
