Abstract Details

Purpose:

In a prospective study functional and visual results from two patient groups after either binocular implantation of an EDoF IOL targeted emmetropia or a Mix & Match approach implanting the EDoF IOL in the distance dominant eye and the trifocal IOL in the fellow eye were evaluated.

Setting:

Augentagesklinik Rheine, Germany

Methods:

Patients were evaluated 3-12 months after uncomplicated implantation of either: 1. binocular EDoF IOL (AT LARA, Carl Zeiss Meditech, Germany), 2. AT LARA in the distance dominant eye and AT LISA tri (Carl Zeiss Meditech, Germany) in the fellow eye. All IOLs were targeted emmetropia. We evaluated UDVA, CDVA, DCIVA in different distances, DCNVA, UNVA, all in logMAR, Salzburg reading desk to determine individual preferred intermediate and near distance, subjective dysphotopsia (Halo & Glare Simulator), defocus curves and patient satisfaction questionnaire.

Results:

Postoperative spherical equivalent was -0,05[+/-0,47] D in group 1, -0,05 [+/-0,38] D in group 2. Binocular UDVA was -0,02[+/-0,15] in group 1 and 0,27 [+/-0,55] UDVA logMAR in group 2, with a binocular CDVA of -0,06[+/-0,16] DCVA and 0,41 [+/-0,41] logMAR. The binocular DCIVA in 80cm was 0,02[+/-0,16] for group 1 and 0,28 [+/-0,42] for group 2. Binocular UNVA was 0,23[+/-0,05] for group 1 and 0,19 [+/-0,07] for group 2. Defocus curve analysis shows a comparable distance visual acuity for both groups with the highest visual acuity at -2.5 D for group 2.

Conclusions:

Both options offer a high degree of spectacle independence from distance to intermediate. Group 1 offers a fairly high degree of spectacle independence in near while the Mix & Match group showed the flattest defocus curve from distance to near.
