Abstract Details

Purpose:

To monitor contrast sensitivity of patients undergone cataract surgery and bilateral implantation of the trifocal Liberty 677MY capsular bag intraocular lens (IOL), in different light conditions, through a 2 year-follow-up period.

Setting:

Department of Ophthalmology, Csolnoky Ferenc University Hospital, Veszprém, Hungary

Methods:

Clinical data available from 100 eyes of 50 cataract patients were evaluated to assess the possible change in contrast sensitivity (CS) due to cataract surgery followed by the implantation of the diffractive trifocal Liberty 677MY IOL by Medicontur. Standard visual acuity measurements were performed and defocus curves were taken, contrast sensitivity was assessed in mesopic, photopic an backlight condition. CS-measurements (CSV-1000) were performed preoperatively, and 1 day, 1 month, 6 weeks, 1, 3, 6, 12 months and 2 years postoperatively. The occurrence and severity of visual disturbances were evaluated based on patient surveys completed during multiple postoperative visits.

Results:

Mean CS values for all spatial frequencies remained unchanged after surgery. All values were in the upper third range of the age-matched normal values. There was no need for YAG capsulotomy during the first postoperative year. 9% of eyes underwent YAG capsulotomy during the second follow-up year. In these latter cases low spatial frequencies showed significant reduction in both mesopic and scotopic conditions.

Conclusions:

Our data suggest, that the trifocal Liberty 677MY IOL provides good contrast sensitivity, and maintains CS in the range considered physiologic for elderly people. This level is shown to be acceptable by patients, especially as dysphotopic phenomena were rarely reported, and easy to tolerate.
