Abstract Details

Purpose:

To report and compare post-operative monocular and binocular visual acuity and refractive outcomes data in patients undergoing RLE with either symmetrical bilateral multifocal IOL implantation or multifocal IOL with contralateral extended depth of focus IOL.

Setting:

Optegra Eye Hospitals, United Kingdom

Methods:

Retrospective, observational case series comprising data recorded between September 2018 and February 2019. Comparison was made in terms of visual acuity and refractive outcomes between one cohort with bilateral Zeiss AT Lisa Trifocal IOL (839MP) (N = 64 eyes of 32 patients) and one cohort with one AT Lisa Trifocal IOL and one Zeiss AT Lara Extended focus IOL (N = 50 eyes of 25 patients)

Results:

No operative complications were seen in either group. Monocular distance uncorrected visual acuity of 20/40 or better was achieved by 98.4% in the bilateral group and 100% in the mixed group, and 20/20 or better in 73.4% in the bilateral and 68.0% in the mixed group. Binocular distance uncorrected visual acuities were 20/20 or better in 84.4% of the bilateral group and 88.0% of the mixed group. Refraction was within ±0.50 D in 78.1% of eyes in the bilateral and 82.0% of eyes in the mixed cohort.

Conclusions:

Both approaches are shown to be similarly effective in respect of vision and refractive outcomes in this case series. Further work is underway to yield additional objective data in respect of monocular and binocular intermediate and near vision outcomes.
