Visual outcomes, contrast and defocus capacity with a new hydrophobic asymmetric–refractive extended-depth-of-focus (EDOF) IOL

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate a new hydrophobic asymmetric-refractive extended depth of focus (EDOF) IOL regarding vision, contrast and extended depth of focus

Setting:

All implantations and follow-ups were performed at the Midland Eye in West Midlands UK

Methods:

This prospective analysis comprises results after implantation of the new asymmetric-refractive EDOF IOL Acunex Vario (Teleon Surgical B.V.) in 40 eyes. Follow up exams were performed at one and three month after surgery. Results for manifest refraction, uncorrected and corrected visual acuity for distance, intermediate and near, defocus curves and contrast sensitivity were documented.

Results:

Mean (±SD) monocular UDVA, UIVA and UNVA at 3 month postoperatively were 0.04 (±0.06), 0.16 (±0.09) and 0.31 (±0.13) logMAR respectively; while mean (±SD) monocular CDVA, DCIVA and DCNVA were 0.02 (±0.07), 0.10 (±0.08) and 0.25 (±0.11) logMAR, respectively. Contrast values showed excellent values under photopic and mesopic conditions. Defocus curve showed a high capacity and continuously high values for distance and all intermediate areas. Defocus slightly decreased from intermediate to near distance.

Conclusions:

The Acunex Vario can provide an excellent defocus capacity focusing on distance and intermediate vision. Patients become more independed in daily routine and glasses might only be needed for reading. There seems to be no side effects on contrast sensitivity with this new EDOF IOL.
