Analysis of glare and halo associated with multifocal intraocular lenses using a model eye

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To analyze glare and halo associated with different multifocal intraocular lenses (IOLs) by photographing an LED light source under dark conditions using a model eye.

Setting:

Tsukazaki Hospital

Methods:

The IOL was placed on the model eye, and a digital camera was attached to the retinal surface. The images recorded on the retinal plane were compared among five types of IOL: ZCB00 (ZCB), ZKB00 (ZKB), ZLB00 (ZLB), ZMB00 (ZMB) and ZXR00V (ZXR). The distance from the center of the LED was normalized and the comparisons were made by computing the radial distribution of luminance normalized against the maximum value (set as 1).

Results:

ZCB00 generated no halo or glare around the light source. Although the characteristics of halo and glare were similar among ZKB, ZLB and ZMB, the diameter sizes of halo and glare were largest for ZMB, followed by ZLB and ZKB. ZXR showed different characteristics compared to the other three lenses and gave rise to starburst-like halos having a large diameter. The ring diameters were: ZMB (0.17), ZLB (0.13), ZKB (0.125), ZCB (0.075), and ZXR (0.07). The intensities of glare at a distance of 0.5 from the center were ZXR (0.389), ZLB (0.291), ZMB (0.257), ZKB (0.222), and ZCB (0.218).

Conclusions:

We could verify the glare and halo associated with the use of multifocal IOLs perceived by the human eye. Halo and glare sizes tended to be larger for IOLs with higher addition powers. By contrast, ZXR showed markedly different characteristics and mainly gave rise to starburst halos and glare.
