Abstract Details

Purpose:

To simulate the optical performance of a rotationally asymmetric extended depth of focus intraocular lens (EDOF IOL) implanted in eyes of various keratoconus (KC) conditions.

Setting:

University of Alicante (Spain).

Methods:

First, a special optical bench with a Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensor was designed for the measurement of the wavefront profile of the Lentis Mplus X LS-313 MF30 (MP). Second, eye models with different KC degrees are constructed using a statistical description of the KC’s anterior corneal surface. Finally, the IOL was introduced as a phase element in the eye model and a simulation of the optical performance was performed by ray tracing.

Results:

At least for two (mild and moderate) of the four conditions studied (mild, moderate, advanced and severe) the use of the MP is beneficial, improving the results of monofocal IOL for far distance and maintaining, to some extent, the extended depth of focus behavior. In general, in all cases MP enhances the monofocal option.

Conclusions:

The Lentis Mplus X LS-313 MF30 can be a beneficial election for cataract surgery in eyes with keratoconus, but as always in this type of patient, the final decision requires a thorough evaluation
