Visual results after implantation of a diffractive aspheric extended-depth-of-focus lens: three-month results

Purpose:
To evaluate the objective and subjective visual outcome of a diffractive-extended depth of focus (EDOF) intraocular lens (IOL) 3 months after femtosecond-assisted cataract surgery and refractive lens exchange
Setting:
University Hospital Frankfurt, Germany
Methods:
30 eyes were implanted with a EDOF IOL (AT LARA, Carl Zeiss, Germany) during cataract surgery or refractive lens exchange to reach spectacle independence postoperatively. Main outcome measures were uncorrected and best spectacle corrected distant, intermediate, and near visual acuity (UDVA, UIVA, UNVA, CDVA, DCIVA, DCNVA; logMAR), spherical equivalent (MRSE) and subjective quality of vision one and three months after surgery.
Results:
3 months postoperative the patients had a significant better UDVA and CDVA with 0.07±0.12 and 0.02±0.1 compared to the preoperative CDVA 0.24±0.11 (p<0.05). The UIVA and DCIVA were significantly better than the UNVA and DCNVA (0.09±0.2 and 0.06±0.2 vs. 0.29±0.18 and 0.26±0.14; p<0.05). The defocus curve shows good far and intermediate visual acuity with functional near vision. The subjective quality of vision shows largely spectacle independence regarding everyday activities with a mediocre amount of optical disturbance.
Conclusions:
The used EDOF IOL offers good distant and intermediate vision with a moderate near visual acuity that allows patients to carry out most everyday activities without glasses. The amount of visual phenomenons was equal or less to most trifocal IOLs.
