Abstract Details
Purpose:
This study was designed to evaluate visual outcomes including visual acuities at different distances, spectacle independence, visual symptoms, and satisfaction of patients bilaterally implanted with the Symfony, Symfony toric, or mixed implantation of the two Symfony lenses in both eyes.
Setting:
A prospective, bilateral open-label, non-comparative, observational study was conducted at Ian Eye Center, Seoul, Korea.
Methods:
Bilateral cataract surgery was done implanted with the Symfony, Symfony toric, or mixed implantation of the two Symfony lenses. Visual outcomes including visual acuities at different distances, spectacle independence, visual symptoms, and satisfaction of patients were checked preoperatively and up to 6 months postoperatively.
Results:
A total of 21 patients have completed their 4-6-month assessments and were included in the analysis. The mean age was 61.29 ± 7.17 years; 71.4% (15/21) were females. The preoperative mean manifest refraction spherical equivalent (MRSE) was -1.07 ± 3.59 D. At the 4-6-month postoperative visit, the MRSE was -0.3 ± 0.33 D.
Three patients underwent bilateral implantation of Tecnis Symfony toric and one patient received Tecnis Symfony in one eye and the toric version in the fellow eye. Due to the small sample size, the toric data are not evaluated separately.
Conclusions:
The results from the Symfony Extended Range of Vision IOL study demonstrated excellent binocular uncorrected visual acuity at all distances (far, intermediate, and near VAs). Spectacle independence was very high, and the occurrence of optical visual symptoms was within the typical expected rate seen in monofocal IOLs. Satisfaction rates were also very high for both patients and surgeons. All patients reported that they would recommend the Symfony IOL to friends and family and that they would choose the same lens again.
