Visual outcomes and subjective quality of vision of a new extended-depth-of-focus toric intraocular lens

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To assess visual outcomes  and subjective quality of vision of a new Extended Depth of Focus (EDOF) toric intraocular lens (IOL).

Setting:

Sanoptic Eye Center, Iasi, Romania Oftaprof Clinic, Iasi, Romania

Methods:

40 eyes from 20 patients with corneal regular astigmatism( 0.75-2.70 D) underwent uncomplicated bilateral cataract surgery with implantation of a new refractive EDOFtoric IOL ( MiniWell Toric, Sifi S.p.A - Catania, Italy). IOL power was calculated using the SRK-T formula with IOL Master 700. MiniWell Toric Calculator was used. One month after surgery we determined: uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA), corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), uncorrected near visual acuity (UNVA) and corrected distance visual acuity (CNVA), defocus curve, Scheimpflug corneal tomography, quality of vision (OQAS), quality of life(NEI-RQL-42) and rotational stability of the lens.

Results:

One  month after the surgery, patients implanted with MiniWell toric IOLs obtained a mean UDVA and  CDVA of respectively 0.05 and 0.00 LogMAR at 4m,  and a mean UNVA  and CNVA of respectively 0.20 and 0.12 LogMAR at 40cm. The defocus curve of the EDOF IOL revealed no gaps for the intermediate range. NEI-RLQ-42 questionnaire scores were 70 for dependence on correction scale, 80.4 for symptoms scale and 91.4 for glare scale. No lens rotation was reported 1 month after surgery.

Conclusions:

The MiniWell toric IOL is an effective treatment for cataract patients with corneal astigmatism in terms of functional outcome and patient’s satisfaction.
