Abstract Details
Purpose:
To study the visual outcome of mix and match with an extended depth of focus (EDOF) intraocular lens (IOL) in one eye
Setting:
Singapore National Eye Centre, a tertiary referral public eye care centre
Methods:
Retrospective clinical audit study of eyes implanted with Tecnis Symfony in one eye, and a different IOL in the fellow eye from January 2015 to June 2018. Data concerning the type of fellow eye IOLs, unaided visual acuity (UVA) for near, intermediate and distance were studied. A questionnaire concerning the visual functionality and satisfaction was also administered by telephone or mail 6 months or more after cataract surgeries.
Results:
Fellow eyes of 97 patients with Symfony had a monofocal (n=90) or multifocal (n=7) IOL. UVAs for Symfony vs multifocal vs monofocal IOL were as follows for distance >20/30: 61% (58/95) vs 67% (4/6) vs 80% (71/89); intermediate >N8: 94% (33/35) vs 100% (2/2) vs 82% (9/11); and near >N6: 76% (60/79) vs 80% (4/5) vs 28% (9/32). Spectacle independence for distance, intermediate and near was achieved in 80%, 78% and 49% of the 82 respondents respectively. 27% had glare and halos. 24% had ocular imbalance. 43% preferred Symfony. 65% were satisfied. 8% were unhappy. Symfony-multifocal combination gave patient satisfaction.
Conclusions:
Mixing and matching Symfony with multifocal IOL gave good outcomes. Mixing with monofocal IOL gave variable satisfaction rates.
