Abstract Details

Purpose:

The aim of the current study is to report the visual outcomes with the Akkolens Lumina accommodative intraocular lens (AIOL) after cataract and refractive lens exchange (RLE) surgeries.

Setting:

Vissum Innovation, Alicante and Miguel Hernández University, Elche, Alicante, Spain

Methods:

This study included 16 eyes of 8 patients that were implanted with the Akkolens Lumina AIOL. Patients were divided in two groups; group A, 10 eyes of 5 patients that underwent cataract surgery with Akkolens Lumina AIOL implantation, and group B, 6 eyes of 3 patients that underwent RLE surgery with Akkolens Lumina AIOL implantation. Distance and near visual acuities, defocus curve, contrast sensitivity and the objective accommodation with Osiris aberrometer were measured. The follow-up was 6 months.

Results:

No statistical significant differences between groups were detected in uncorrected and corrected distance and near visual acuities (p≥0.39). The UNVA change from 0.18±0.10 to 0.62±0.15 (p=0.01) and form 0.29±0.25 to 0.57±0.18 (p=0.11) with the surgery in groups A and B, respectively. Defocus curve only statistical significant differences were detected for defocus levels of +1.50 and +1.0D (p≤0.02) with better visual acuities for group B. In contrast sensitivity a statistical significant differences between groups were observed for the spatial frequency of 12.0 cpd (p=0.02) with better outcomes for group A.

Conclusions:

The AIOL Akkolens Lumina restore the visual function similarly after cataract and refractive lens exchange surgeries.
