Abstract Details

Purpose:

The treatment range of phakic intraocular lenses (pIOLs) has recently been extended with the launching of Implantable Phakic Contact Lens (IPCL, Care Group, location, India). We report our first outcomes of spherical and toric IPCL implantation in moderate to highly myopic eyes.

Setting:

Center for Refractive Surgery, Eye Department at St. Francis Hospital, Münster, Germany

Methods:

Observational consecutive case series. Inclusion criteria: myopic and myopic astigmatic eyes after implantation of of spherical or toric IPCL for full correction where high ametropia or corneal conditions have excluded a laser-based refractive procedure.

Results:

Thirty eyes were included (16 eyes receiving a toric IPCL). At 3 months, mean spherical equivalent refraction was +0.04+/-0.33D (range: -0.29 to +0.36D) and mean cylinder -0.33+/-0.23D (range: 0 to -0.75D). Mean uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA) was 1.13 (decimal scale). Mean efficacy index was 1.13 (mean postoperative UDVA/mean preoperative corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA)). Mean safety index was 1.22 (mean postoperative CDVA/mean preoperative CDVA). In 87% of eyes postoperative UDVA was same or better than preoperative CDVA. Astigmatism was less than or equal to 0.5D in 93% and less than or equal to 1D in 100% of eyes, respectively.

Conclusions:

We found excellent visual and refractive outcomes after implantation of IPCL for the correction of high and moderate myopia with or without astigmatism. IPCL may be suitable for myopic eyes where laser-based refractive procedures are not an option. However, longer follow-up is warranted to determine stability of results.
