Corneal thinning induced by self-application of alum substance: first case report and analysis of the active components

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To report a case of severe ocular injury after self-administered alum substance in the left eye

Setting:

King Khaled Eye Specialist Hospital, Saudi Arabia

Methods:

A 56-year-old woman who had severe corneal thinning and visual impairment following self-administered alum substance. Analysis of the alum substance was obtained using a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM).

Results:

The patient had severe corneal thinning and scar and reported a vision of Counting finger 1 meter in the left eye (OS). The composition of the active compounds of the alum substance was analyzed using Scanning Electron Microscope SEM

Conclusions:

Public awareness, early recognition of such injuries, and timely intervention may prevent permanent ocular damage
