Abstract Details
Purpose:
Assessment the application of the thermopulsed treatment in the MGD
Setting:
Hospital Universitario Quironsalud Madrid
Methods:
A prospective comparative case series was conducted with 150 eyes presenting with severe dry eye syndrome. The NBUT, Schirmer I, lipid layer thickness and OSDI questionnaire before and after applying Lipiflow treatment were analyzed. An exploration with Lipiview of the Meibomian glands, the thickness of the lipid layer and the blinking before and after the treatment is performed. Post-treatment tests were performed at one month and three months. 90% of the sample were women in an age range: 40-80 years and 10% of men between 50-60 years. For the comparison of means between groups, a student's t test was used.
Results:
All the patients improved after the application of the thermopulsed treatment in all the parameters analyzed. OSDI questionnaire pre 19.56 ± 6.20 (13.33) and post 12.13 ± 5.78 (5.30) (p <0.001). NIBUT pre 11.44 ± 2.99 sec (5.17) and post 17.09 ± 5.47 sec (10.30) (p <0.001). Schirmer I pre 8.53 ± 3.38 mm (5.15) and post 17.03 ± 5.43 mm (9.27) (p <0.001). The thickness of the lipid layer pre 55.13 ± 15.27 microns (30,100) and post 72.06 ± 11.02 (53.95) microns (p <0.001).
Conclusions:
The BUT is improved after treatment. Significantly improves the lipid layer thickness and the schirmmer I by doubling its value. In the OSDI questionnaires, the score is improved after the treatment. All patients report a pleasant sensation during the treatment and are very satisfied with the treatment applied at 3 months.
