Histomorphology of lacrimal gland in chronic sequelae of Stevens-Johnson syndrome

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the microscopic anatomy of lacrimal gland in chronic Stevens Johnson syndrome (SJS).

Setting:

Prospective interventional case series in a tertiary eye care centre

Methods:

Four patients of chronic SJS with severe dry eyes awaiting minor salivary gland transplantation were included. Schirmer test was zero mm in each of the cases. Incisional biopsies from palpebral lobe of lacrimal gland were performed under topical anaesthesia.

Results:

The mean age was 52 years (median = 53, range 29–86). Histopathological examination showed mild chronic interlobar and interlobular lymphocytic infiltrate (2), mild interlobular fibrosis (2), normal acinar lobules (4), and mild acinar atrophy (1). None of the cases had periductal fibrosis or ductal dilatation.

Conclusions:

Except mild chronic inflammation in the interlobular areas, lacrimal gland acini are well preserved in chronic SJS with severe dry eyes.
