Abstract Details

Purpose:

To assess the prevalence rate of hypermetropia among children in settlements of different types on example of Ganja-Gazakh economic region of the Azerbaijan Republic.

Setting:

National Centre of Ophthalmology named after Zarifa Aliyeva

Methods:

900 children at the ages of 5- 19 years (150 boys and girls per each age group: 5-9, 10-14, 15-19 years) in Ganja city (big city), in small towns (administrative centres of regions) and villages have been examined. All children were examined by us using the standard methods of diagnosing hypermetropia. Statistical processing was carried out by methods of analysis of qualitative characteristics.

Results:

In all settlements the prevalence rate of hypermetropia among children and girls was similar and did not differ significantly from each other, in average 5,2±0,6 and 5,4±0,6 cases of  hypermetropia accounted per 100 boys and girls. Difference between settlements for prevalence rate of hypermetropia wasn’t significant.

Conclusions:

The prevalence rate of hypermetropia among children of age  5-19 years in big cities (5,2±0,7%) and small towns (5,2±0,7%)  and villages (5,3±0,7%) is similar. Hypermetropia among children of age  5-9 years (6,9±0,8% -all, 7,1±1,2% -boys, 6,7±1,2% -girls) is statistically often observed in comparison with 15-19 years old children (correspondingly: 4,0±0,7; 3,8±0,9 and 4,2±0,9%).
