Patients' knowledge about day-care cataract surgery

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the patients knowledge about day care cataract surgery and identification of the factors for improving surgical and overall outcomes.

Setting:

Department of Ophthalmology and Optometry, General Hospital (GH) "Dr. Josip Bencevic" in Slavonski Brod, Croatia.

Methods:

The research was done in the GH "Dr. Josip Bencevic ", Department of Ophthalmology and Optometry in Slavonski Brod, on 161 patients who underwent cataract surgery. The research was conducted in the period from April to June 2018. The measuring instrument of this research was an anonymous questionnaire survey created for the purpose of this research.

Results:

The research included 161 patients (68 men and 93 women). The mean age of the patients was 73±7.8 years. Statistical analysis showed that 99.4% of the patients were satisfied with the information provided by doctors and nurses. The majority of the patients knew the procedure up to the cataract surgery. The purpose of the preoperative assessment for the cataract surgery knew 63.5% of all the patients, but most of them didn't know about the biometric measurments or intraocular lens implants. Most patients didn't know the postoperative course. The main form of information for the patients is conversation with people.

Conclusions:

The research has shown that it is necessary to extend the education of the patients with quality communication and other types of information, and to stimulate the patient's interest to improve eye care quality.
