Abstract Details

Purpose:

To assess the changes in meibography pre and post light therapy

Setting:

Kenia Eye Hospital, Mumbai, India

Methods:

Its a retrospective interventional case series where dry eye subjects who have undergone light therapy and best corrected visual acuity 0.2 logMAR or better were included. light therapy was given by Eye-Light (Toshbro Medicals) using standard manufacturer protocol. Eye Light uses optimized pulse energy and low level light therapy to treat meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). Meibography was done using Me-Check which is a MGD screening module. Me Check uses high definition IR images of meibomian glands to classifies the MGD on a scale of 0-4 where 0 indicates normal and 4 indicates very severe MGD.

Results:

Seventy six eyes had undergone Eye-light therapy. Pre therapy 9, 43 and 24 patients had grade 1,2 and 3 level MGD respectively. After therapy, all patients with grade 1 improved to grade 0. Those who had grade 2 MGD, after therapy 74% improved to grade 0 and 26% had improved to grade 1. Similarly, subjects with grade 3 MGD, post therapy, 42% improved to grade 0 and 58% improved to grade 1.  Chi square test revealed statistical significant improvement in the grades of MGD post therapy (Chi square = 12.48 , P =0.002).

Conclusions:

Eye-light therapy is found to be effective in treating the MGD.
