Abstract Details
Purpose:
To evaluate the clinical outcomes, pain scoring and epithelial healing between transepithelial photo refractive keratectomyand alcohol assisted photorefractive keratectomy in eyes with mild to moderate myopia.
Setting:
Prasad Netralaya super speciality Eye hospital, Udupi, Karnataka, India
Retrospective comparative case series study
Methods:
100 eyes of 50 patients with mild to moderate myopia (-1D to -6D) were treated with transepithelial phototherapeutic keratectomy mode or alcohol assisted photorefractive keratectomy mode ( 50 eyes in each group). Ablation was done using Carl Zeiss, MEL 80. Visual acuity, manifest refraction, slit lamp examination, corneal topography were measured preoperatively. evaluation of post operative pain was done by the wong baker pain scale. the corneal epithelium was evaluated on the second day, fifth day,1 month and at 6th month. visual acuity, efficacy, safety at 1 month, 3rd month and 6th month after surgery were compared between groups.
Results:
the mean uncorrected distance visual acuity was comparable in the transepithelial and alcohol assisted groups at 6 months after surgery. pain was found to be lesser and faster re-epithelization was noted in the transepithelial photorefractive keratectomy group.safety and efficacy were also comparable between groups.
Conclusions:
pain and overall discomfort was found to be lesser in the transepithelial photorefractive group with fast epithelial healing.both trasepithelial and alcohol assited photorefractive keratectomy provided effective and safe outcomes for the correction of mild to moderate myopia without differences in visual acuity and refractive outcomes between the procedures.
