Abstract Details
Purpose:
To assess the accuracy in astigmatism correction with RELEX SMILE technique and to compare it with the outcomes in astigmatism correction with LASIK technique.
Setting:
IOA Madrid Innova Ocular, Madrid, Spain
Methods:
10 eyes with astigmatism above -2.00 diopters went under RELEX SMILE surgery, and comparison was made with 10 eyes with astigmatism above -2.00 diopters which went under LASIK surgery. Preop astigmatism, preop spherical equivalent (SE), preop corrected visual acuity (AV), postop astigmatism, postop uncorrected and corrected VA, effectiveness index (EI) and safeness index (SI) were compared between each group. Number of enhancement treatments was considered too.
Results:
In RELEX SMILE group, preop astigmatism was -3.03 ± 0.76 diopters; preop SE was -4.71 ± 1.31 diopters; preop VA was 1.09 ± 0.09; postop astigmatism was-0.33 ± 0.37 diopters; postop uncorrected VA was 0.99 ± 0.06; postop corrected VA was 1.06 ± 0.08; EI was 0.91 ± 0.09; SI was 0.98 ± 0.05. In the LASIK group, preop astigmatism was -3.03 ± 1.18 diopters; preop SE was -2.71 ± 2.24 diopters; postop uncorrected VA was 0,88 ± 0,13; postop corrected VA was 0.98 ± 0.04; Statistical significant differences were only observed in preop SE (p=0.03) and postop astigmatism (p=0.001)
Conclusions:
Relex SMILE is an effective technique for astigmatism correction, despite cyclotorsion compensation is not still available. Although 50% of eyes which went under Relex SMILE surgery came up with astigmatism, it was less than 1 diopter, and no eye needed enhancement surgery. In LASIK group, 4 of 10 eyes came up with astigmatism, but all of them over 1 diopter, and all of them needed enhancement surgery.
