Abstract Details
Purpose:
To evaluate the effectiveness of small incision lenticule extraction in astigmatism correction
Setting:
Department of Ophthalmology, Selcuk University Faculty of Medicine, Konya, Turkey
Methods:
140 eyes of 71 patients were included in this retrospective study. Astigmatism is measured preoperatively and postoperatively with autorefraction and keratometry. The correlation between the amount of preoperative astigmatism and postoperative residual astigmatism was evaluated. The association of the amount of residual astigmatism with the type of the astigmatism (with the rule, against the rule and oblique) was determined. The statistical analysis was done by SPSS 20.0 Inc.
Results:
The amount of residual astigmatism was correlated with the magnitude of preoperative astigmatism (rho:0.807, p=0.001) and this correlation was more greater over 1,25D of preoperative astigmatism ( rho:850, p=0.001). The type of astigmatism did not affect the amount of postoperative astigmatism (p>0.05).
Conclusions:
SMILE is a safe and effective method for astigmatism correction if preoperative astigmatism does not exceed 1,25D. Some adjustment should be performed in patients having 1,25D astigmatism or more.
