Abstract Details
Purpose:
To demonstrate the role of optical coherence tomography (OCT) in identifying the character and depth of anterior corneal opacities.
Setting:
A case report.
Methods:
A 45-year-old female complained of progressive blurred vision for a long time. Slit lamp biomicroscopy showed irregular, faint scar-like opacity of anterior cornea in her both eyes. Pentacam Scheimpflug camera tomography showed irregular astigmatism of anterior corneal surface. Anterior segment spectral-domain OCT revealed thickened, hyperreflective linings and scattered lesions, mainly in the epithelial layer.
Results:
Epithelial basement membrane dystrophy (EBMD) was impressed with the help of anterior segment OCT. Epithelial debridement and bandage lenses were performed. The cornea became clear and the vision improved soon after debridement. The pathology confirmed the diagnosis of EBMD, as suggested by anterior segment spectral-domain OCT.
Conclusions:
Anterior segment spectral-domain OCT was an effective tool in diagnosis and evaluation of anterior corneal opacities such as EBMD.
