Abstract Details

Purpose:

to present an inexpensive and convenient technique for anterior chamber angle imaging via smartphone without using slit lamp.

Setting:

Ophthalmology Department, Naval Hospital of Athens, Athens, Greece.

Methods:

A smartphone, a positive spherical +20D trial lens, a Goldmann three-mirror lens and viscoelastic substance were used for this technique. The positive spherical +20D trial lens was stabilized in front of smartphone camera. The smartphone camera application was activated with continuous light mode on. The Goldmann three-mirror lens was applied on patient’s eye, while the patient was placed in supine position. Smartphone camera settings were adjusted to take photos and videos of anterior chamber angle with the best possible resolution.

Results:

Through the described technique, both photo and 360° video images were captured, depicting satisfactorily the anterior chamber angle structures. The captured images could be easily and effectively edited, saved and electronically sent. The whole procedure in general as well as light emission from camera were proved to be well tolerated by the patients and within safety limits. Both normal and pathological cases, such as Sampaolesi line, iris process/synechia and abnormal pigmentation, were examined and are presented.

Conclusions:

The described technique consists a trustworthy, inexpensive and convenient method to depict the anterior chamber angle structures and possible abnormalities, eliminating the need of using slit lamp. This method could be really useful not only in cases of unable to move patients who need gonioscopy examination, but also in teleophthalmology practice.
