Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the meibomian gland morphology and ocular surface parameters in patients with posterior blepharitis and to assess the relationship between meibography findings, lid margin abnormality scores and ocular surface parameters.

Setting:

Bayindir Hospital, Department of Ophthalmology, Ankara, Turkey.

Methods:

This study included fifty two eyes of 26 patients (14male, 12 women) diagnosed with posterior blepharitis at Bayindir Hospital between November 2018- March 2019. Noncontact meibography were performed and analysed with the software in Scheimpflug camera(Sirius,Italy). Noninvasive tear film break-up time (Sirius, CSO, Italy), conjunctival staining with lissamine green, corneal staining with florescein, Schirmer testing, tear osmolarity (TearLab Corporation, USA),Ocular surface disease index (OSDI) questionaire, Oxford scale, lid margin abnormality score, the degree of conjunctival hyperemia and superficial punctate keratopathy were recorded. Patients were classified depending on the meiboscale results. Group 1 consisted of the patients with <2 and Group 2 with ≥2 meiboscale.

Results:

The mean age of 26 patients was 42.6±19.7 (14-76) years. The mean degree of loss of meibomian glands was 1.9±0.8 (38±17.7%) for upper eyelids and it was 2.2± 0.4 (42.1±13.5%) for lower eyelids.Tear osmolarity was found 295±12 (275-320) mOsm, Schirmer testing 10.1±7 (2-25) mm,noninvasive break-up time 6.9±3. (1.6-17)seconds,the mean Oxford scale 2.2±0.7,lid margin abnormality score 2.9±1,degree of conjunctival hyperemia 2.4±0.8, degree of superficial keratopathy 1.6±0.6,OSDI test results 50.9±16.9 (14.58-75). Degree of conjunctival hyperemia Oxford scale, superficial punctate keratopathy, lid margin abnormality scores were significantly higher in Group2 compared to Group1 (p=0.001,p=0.001,p=0.024, p=0.05;respectively).

Conclusions:

Meibography findings correlates with the severity of the ocular surface parameters in patients with posterior blepharitis. It is very useful and objective tool to show the meibomian gland involvement and to assess the severity of the disease in order to select the appropriate treatment for patients.
