Abstract Details

Purpose:

To study the characteristics of diurnal and nocturnal OPP changes in patients of different ages with Glaucoma suspicion.

Setting:

Kyiv Eye Center, Kyiv Medical University

Methods:

Studies were performed in the Eye Center using ICare tonometry for IOP control with 4- hour interval. 40 patients were examined: 20 at the age of 40-60 years (group 1) and 20 at the age older 61 years (group 2). The suspicion on glaucoma was established by the EGS protocol (4th edition, 2014). All patients used drugs from a group of beta-blockers to lower blood pressure prescribed by a cardiologist.

Results:

In both age groups were revealed the nocturnal changes: the increase of IOP and the decrease of blood pressure, and OPP. In group 1 there was the nocturnal increase of IOP in the range of 3.05% with a nocturnal decrease in OPP till 1.0% (0.97%). In group 2, the night changes in parameters were more prominent: IOP by 4.4% (1.4% higher than in group 1), and the decrease of OPP by 3.1%, which was almost 3 times more than in group 1. Maximum changes took place in the time interval from 22.00 to 04.00 houres.

Conclusions:

The revealed data demonstrated differences in the IOP, BP and OPP at night and day time in Glaucoma suspicion patients. There were significant and more pronounced changes in group 2 which was alder then  60 years. These difference might be connected with age-related vascular changes and may increase the risk of glaucoma development and progression of optical neuropathy in the future. So it is the base to provide special examination of such group of patients.
