Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the differences of central corneal thickness (CCT), corneal endothelial cell morphology, and biometric parameters of the anterior chamber and iridocorneal angle (ICA) in eyes with pigment dispersion syndrome (PDS) or pigmentary glaucoma (PG), and healthy subjects.

Setting:

Beyoglu Eye Training and Research Hospital, University of Health Science, Istanbul, Turkey.

Methods:

Twenty-four eyes of 21 patients with PG and 23 eyes of 12 patients with PDS (Group 1) and 45 eyes of 45 healthy subjects (Group 2) were included in this cross-sectional study. Corneal endothelial cell density (ECD), the coefficient of variation (CV) in the cell area, hexagonality, and CCT were obtained by specular microscopy (CEM 530, NIDEK, Japan). Anterior chamber depth (ACD), ICA parameters were measured by anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT; Visante OCT, Carl Zeiss AG, Germany).

Results:

There were no significant differences between groups in terms of age and intraocular pressure (IOP).The mean CCT were 543.83±42.07 and 569.13±37.51µ (p=0.002); ECD were 2695.93±314.61 and 2694.02±288.34 per mm2 (p=0.977); hexagonality were 62.66±10.81% and 62.53±8.56% (p=0.951);CV were 33.87±6.90 and 28.82±5.18(p<0.001) in group 1 and 2,respectively.The mean parameters obtained with AS-OCT were as follows:OCT-CCT were 525.45±40.81 and 547.04±36.71µ (p=0.007); ACD were 3.31±0.30 and 2.91±0.34 mm (p<0.001), scleral spur angle 0 degrees were; 60.28±10.04,and 30.47±12.31(p<0.001);180 degrees were 60.70±11.54 and 37.44±11.95 (p<0.001), respectively.

Conclusions:

Eyes with PG and PDS have thinner cornea and higher CV; larger AS-OCT parameters than normals.
