Abstract Details
Purpose:
The aim of the study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of minimally invasive glaucoma surgery with XEN Gel Stent implantation in patients with open-angle glaucoma.
Setting:
Department of Ophthalmology, Professor K. Gibinski University Clinical Center of the Medical University of Silesia, Katowice, Poland
Methods:
20 patients (aged 63 ± 11 years) treated for open-angle glaucoma with intraocular pressure inadequate for glaucoma control at the maximum tolerated local IOP-lowering treatment were taken in a retrospective analysis. All patients underwent XEN Gel Stent implantation with conjunctival injection of Mitomycin C. The best corrected visual acuity, intraocular pressure measured by Goldmann applanation tonometry and the number of topical glaucoma medications before and after the surgery were analyzed. Follow-up was until 12 months.
Results:
In the first postop day BCVA was decreased from 0.46 to 0.4 and was not significant. The reduction of intraocular pressure after surgery was achieved from 25,2 +/-8,3 mmHg preop to 10.4 +/-2.3 mmHg postop (p<0.05). The number of topical glaucoma medications has been reduced (from 2.78 to 0.80). In 5 cases the needling was required in the first days after the procedure. No postop inflammation or corneal decompensation were observed.
Conclusions:
The minimally invasive glaucoma surgery with XEN Gel Stent implantation is an effective method of lowering the intraocular pressure with a high safety profile
