Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the efficacy of iStent Inject ® device (Glaukos, San Clemente, CA) associated or not with phacoemulsification in eyes with chronic open angle glaucoma, pseudoexfoliative glaucoma, narrow angle glaucoma, and pigmentary glaucoma.

Setting:

University Hospital La Paz, Madrid, Spain

Methods:

This is a retrospective case series. All patients who were implanted with iStent inject at the University Hospital La Paz from April 2017 to November 2018 were included, most of them associated with phacoemulsification at the same time. Postoperatively, patients were assesed on days 1 and 7, and months 1,2,6 and 12. At each visit, intraocular pressure (IOP), medication usage, visual acuity and the presence of complications were recorded.

Results:

Forty-three patients were included in this study. At 6 months after surgery, mean IOP had fallen from 16.7 mmHg to 15.7 Average medication usage was reduced from 1.8 to 0.3 medications in 6 months. Over 80% of eyes became medication-free by 6 months post implantation, reaching 100% in the 8 patients reviewed one year after surgery.  The most common postoperative complications were the implantation of just one istent in 6 patients and the postsurgical intraocular hypertension in 11 patients. No significant intraoperative or postoperative complications were found.

Conclusions:

In our experience, iStent inject implantation demonstrated a clinically significant IOP and medication reductions for at least 12 months after the surgery, with a good safety profile.
