Two-year refractive outcomes of SMILE and FS-LASIK for high myopia, super high myopia and myopic astigmatism of -6.00D to -12.50D

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare the long-term refractive effects of SMILE and FS-LASIK for correction of high myopia, super high myopia and myopic astigmatism.

Setting:

Eye and ENT Hospital Affiliated to Fudan University

Methods:

This retrospective study included 121 patients(121 eyes: 75 eyes in SMILE group and 46 eyes in FS-LASIK group) who underwent SMILE or FS-LASIK for high myopia 2 years ago. Observation indicators included uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA), corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), and subjective optometry results. Subgroup analysis of high myopia (-6.00D to-8.75D) and super high myopia (-9.00D to-12.50D) was performed. Astigmatism was divided into low TIA (<-1.00D) and high TIA (≥-1.00D) subgroups according to target induced astigmatism (TIA) and subgroup analysis was performed. P < 0.05 showed significant difference.

Results:

Except for LogMAR CDVA (P=0.026), there was no significant difference between SMILE group and FS-LASIK group in LogMAR UDVA, spherical, cylindrical and spherical equivalent(SE) 2 years after operation(P>0.05). The effective index and safety index of SMILE group and FS-LASIK group were 1.02±0.24 and 1.03±0.24 respectively (P>0.05), and 1.23±0.22 and 1.20±0.24 respectively(P>0.05). LogMAR UDVA and SE in high myopia subgroup were better than those in super high myopia subgroup (P < 0.05).

Conclusions:

There was no significant difference between SMILE and FS-LASIK in correcting myopic astigmatism, the correction effect of high myopia was better than that of super high myopia, and the index of success (IOS) of low TIA was higher than that of high TIA (P < 0.05).
