Abstract Details

Purpose:

To report the results, the surgical technique and complications of patients treated with topography guided PRK and simultaneous corneal cross linking for the treatment of keratoconus.

Setting:

National Ophtalmology Centre named after acad. Zarifa Aliyeva.

Methods:

8 eyes of 8 patients with keratoconus were treated with topography guided PRK followed by same day cross-linking. Excimer laser ablation was performed with the WaveLight® EX 500 (Germany)  and corneal cross-linking was performed with the VEGA CBM-X-Linger (Italy)  CXL machine. Excimer laser ablation was limited up to 50microns of the anterior stroma and aimed to improve the patientients corneal aberrations and not to treat the patientients total refractive error.

Results:

Uncorrected visual acuity and best spectacle corrected visual acuity improved in all patients included in the study. One patient developed mild haze of the anterior stroma which was succefully treated with prolonged therapy of steroid drops.

Conclusions:

Topography guided PRK combined with CXL is a good option for patients suffering from keratoconus.
