Abstract Details
Purpose:
To assess the outcome of combined femtosecond laser-assisted intrastromal corneal ring segments (ICRS) implantation and accelerated transepithelial corneal collagen cross-linking (CXL) in cases of pellucid marginal degeneration (PMD).
Setting:
Ophthalmology department of Sohag university hospital in collaboration with Sohag Future private center in Egypt.
Methods:
Six eyes of three patients with PMD were included in this study. All eyes were treated by femtosecond laser-assisted Keraring implantation followed by accelerated transepithelial CXL in the same session.
Results:
After 6 months; the mean uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA) improved from 0.9 (logMAR) to 0.7 while the mean best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) improved from 0.7 to 0.4. The mean preoperative maximum keratometry (Kmax) was 65.2 D while the mean postoperative Kmax was 53.9 D. No complications were recorded intraoperatively or postoperatively.
Conclusions:
Combined femtosecond laser-assisted Keraring implantation and accelerated transepithelial CXL is safe and effective in the treatment of PMD.
