Abstract Details

Purpose:

To report the incidence of endophthalmitis following phacoemulsification surgery from January 2016 to August 2018

Setting:

Dr Om Parkash Eye Institute

Methods:

Retrospective,single-center,cross-sectional study was done at Dr Om Parkash Eye Institute,India. It included 17346 consecutive patients undergoing phacoemulsification surgery.Risk factors of post operative endophthalmitis described in literature were tabulated.Selection criteria of patients undergoing surgery were established.Strict preoperative, intraoperative & post operative protocols were adhered to.Patients were posted for surgery following strict exclusion of risk factors.Identical protocols were adhered to in charitable and premium patients. No intracameral antibiotic was used.Patients with acute post operative endophthalmitis were identified during period of 6 weeks from day of surgery

Results:

In the time period of January 2016 to August 2018,17346  phacoemulsification procedures were carried out . There were two patients who reported for endophthalmitis . The incidence of post operative endophthalmitis was observed as 0.011%. patients.

Conclusions:

Identification of risk factors for endophthalmitis, strict adherence to selection criteria in posting for surgery, standardisation of  surgical and post surgical protocols help in achieving endophtalmitis rates comparable to intracameral antibiotics studies reported in other contemporary surgical settings.
