Corneal collagen cross-linking for the treatment of infectious keratitis

Abstract Details

Purpose:

assessment of  the efficacy and safety of corneal collagen cross-linking (CXL)   in the management of infectious keratitis  .

Setting:

department of opthalmology ,Assiut university,Egypt

Methods:

ten eyes of 10  patients with severe infectious keratitis were treated with corneal crosslinking. Symptom duration before CXL ranged between few days up to months. Photodocumentation of the keratitis was carried out and repeated at follow-up. All patients received topical antibiotic treatment in addition to the CXL treatment.

Results:

In all patients experienced improvement in symptoms within 24 hours. Complete epithelialization was achieved in all cases. In cases with hypopyon, this regressed completely within 5 days after the CXL. Follow-up ranged between 1 and 6 months.

Conclusions:

CXL seems promising in the management of infectious keratitis, excluding viral infections.
