Abstract Details
Purpose:
To report a case of epithelial ingrowth resolution after combined photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) and corneal cross-linking (CXL) for post-LASIK corneal ectasia.
Setting:
To report a case of epithelial ingrowth resolution after combined photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) and corneal cross-linking (CXL) for post-LASIK corneal ectasia.
Methods:
A 34-year-old male was referred to our Institute for evaluation of his left eye due to corneal ectasia ten years after bilateral LASIK. Three months prior to his referral, the patient had undergone a flap lift for the management of interface fluid accumulation. Topography demonstrated post-LASIK corneal ectasia and slit-lamp examination revealed epithelial ingrowth in the stromal interface inferiorly. The patient underwent uneventful combined photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) and corneal cross-linking (CXL) to stabilize the corneal ectasia and improve his functional vision.
Results:
One month after the treatment, slit-lamp examination revealed complete resolution of stromal interface epithelial ingrowth. At 12 months postoperatively, a significant visual and topographic improvement was noted without any evidence of epithelial ingrowth recurrence or corneal ectasia progression.
Conclusions:
Combined PRK-CXL in a post-LASIK corneal ectasia patient with epithelial ingrowth seems to not only treat successfully the corneal pathology resulting in visual and topographic improvement but also resolve the stromal interface epithelial ingrowth.
